“Moderately” spreading ground cover for zone 7B

Are there any good moderately spreading ground covers? I'm in zone 7B on the NW side of Atlanta and we took some trees down and now the area under where they are at is a weedy mess. It has really good soil but is on a hill so I don't really want to mow it. The area is half sun/half shade, and weeds are growing aggressively so a wanted plant should grow as well. Something that can spread somewhat but isn't an English Ivy or something obnoxious like that. I have some Virginia Creeper that has come in the yard and something like that might work. Basically I'm looking for something that keeps weeds down and controls erosion and doesn't need much maintenance.
