Is our tree beyond saving, or does it have a chance at life?

We moved into this house two years ago and have done a significant amount of landscape clean-up work.

We enjoyed these two trees since they help provide a boundary between our yard and our neighbors.

On the LEFT tree, last year, about 10% of the branches were looking bare, so we went ahead and trimmed them out – leaving more green to shine through. However, this year, it seems like more than 50% of the branches are bare…and it's looking like it's on its last stretch.

Even further, the tree on the RIGHT is showing some similar signs of bare branches.

Does anyone have an idea what may be happening? Does it look like it could be saved?
