Help needed; zone 7b, north side, clay soil. Had to cut down previous tree due to anthracnose.

I need help. I'm in Surrey BC (Canada); zone 7b, but pretty warm so borderline 8a. Soil is clay, and seems to be prone to fungus / anthracnose. Our previous tree got sick and had to be removed.

I'm comfortable with power tools and digging, and want to put a tree in place of the one I had to cut down.

Some ideas I have in mind: Alaskan weeping cedar w/ possible japanese maple / lavender combo or perhaps an evergreen magnolia (not gradiflora because it's too big).

Photos of the location:

Thanks so much!!
