Edging Around Tree with Surface Roots

I have a large maple in my front lawn with lots of surface roots. I'd like to put edging around it, but I have two concerns:

  1. It will look dumb with roots all around the yard.

  2. It will be too close to the adjacent driveway.

I've read online that the edging should be at least three feet in all directions, but also that it should be as far as the top of the tree goes. Which should it be? Is this really something more appropriate for younger trees?
